How online survey sites work

Marketing is big business. By learning to target products at the right people, companies cut their advertising spend and increase sales. Add to that the focus group world of politics and the media, and it's clear why businesses pay for your opinions.

Better still, because the whole point is focusing on different types of people, you don't need special qualifications. You just need to be you.

How to take part

There are two ways to take part:

Online surveys for cash. All you have to do is sign up, wait for survey alerts to land in your inbox, then zip through the questions. Survey sites then add the cash to your account. Focus groups. Traditional market research focus groups pay much more per session, but you're limited to a few a year. All it involves is giving opinions on the chosen subject, usually with free refreshments, and you can walk away with anything from £20 to £160. See Focus Groups below for more.

Dedicated survey-stashers can make £200 a year in cash and vouchers. Some forumites have even pushed it to the max and made £800 a year.

I am a massive fan of focus groups as a way of earning some extra cash - especially if you have time on your side. I go after work or in my lunch break, and I recently got £160 for half a day.

What Is It?

Make money by filling out surveys online.

Short Review:

It sounds like a nice idea, but it’s a lot more work than they make it sound.

Before You Buy:

After wading through the typical marketing BS, upsells, and crap, there’s a decent list of places where you can find surveys to fill out. I signed up for 4 of them to test it out and see if I could make money. Up until this point, the product seems pretty legit. Watch the video below for details on what happened.

What I Liked:

The members area was pretty well designed, and looked like a legit place where you could make some money. If I had actually made some money filling out surveys, it would be very convenient to have a list like this.

What I Didn’t Like:

There was a BS upsell trying to get you to build a website, and they said that a website would normally cost you $2000. Yeah, right! It costs $10 for a domain (per year), and about $5 per month for hosting. That was the first red flag.

Then there was a bunch of other promotional crap trying to say you could make money writing articles and books. Wait, what? I thought this was about filling out surveys. They go on and on about things like affiliate marketing, twitter, blogger, eBay, and Google, but again, we just signed up for the Get Cash For Surveys program, not the ‘make money in a kagillion ways‘ program.

The Main Problems:

From the survey sites I signed up for, I could see a few running themes. These sites do not pay “cash”. They reward you with points, and those points can be redeemed for vouchers. Not all allow for cash withdraws. In fact, some don’t even give you a choice of vouchers.

Some give you NOTHING, and only enter you for a chance to win various products.

Even those that allow you to withdraw to your Paypal account place an arbitrary value on the money. You make ‘points’ by filling out a survey, and exchange points for discount cards or money via Paypal. One site required 1100 points for $100. I filled out a short survey, totally at random, as fast as I could and received 10 whole points.

At that speed, for that amount of points, if I worked 100% of every hour, ONLY filling out surveys, I would make about $5 per hour. The problem with that, besides being minimum wage, is that you cannot fill out that many surveys. You must ‘browse’, wait for new surveys to be delivered, and you may be required to do other tasks before you start working (like sign up for something).

For example, the second survey site I tried was a dead link. Time wasted.

The third website I visited had me filling out forms I thought was a survey, but it turns out they were promotional offers for another website. After finally finding the survey section of the site, I was unable to start the survey until I ‘signed up’ for another offer from a different website.

And on the fourth website (trying to fulfill my obligation to start working on the third one), I discovered that they don’t pay you in anything but ‘entries’ into sweepstakes.

Who Is This Product For:

Someone with a lot of time.
